Okay, this is the technical version of dark hair, the actual formulas, not just inspiration photos. If you want the full styled lookbook first, start with dark fall hair, then come back here once you know your direction.
These are the 25 dark shade formulas I’m mixing most this season, grouped by undertone so you know exactly what to ask for and what it takes to maintain.
Save the formula name and bring it in with you.
Espresso
Warm and rich with a slight red-brown cast, espresso is the most requested dark formula I mix all fall.
Black Cherry
A dark base with a red-purple undertone that only shows in direct light, this is my favorite “secretly colorful” dark formula.
Dark Chocolate
True neutral brown-black, no red, no ash, just a deep, even dark shade with zero surprises.
Blue Black
The coolest, most dramatic formula on this list, blue black has a cool sheen that reads almost navy under certain light.
Dark Chestnut
Warmest of the dark formulas, dark chestnut has just enough red-brown to keep it from ever reading flat.
