There’s a reason 90s hair keeps coming back around my chair. It’s not fussy, it’s not overworked, and it photographs like you didn’t try, which is the hardest thing to actually pull off. The 90s lob is the shoulder-grazing, slightly flipped, center-part energy of Rachel Green and Jennifer Aniston’s less famous but equally good cuts.
Here are the twelve versions that bring that decade back without making you look like you’re in a costume.
The Center-Part Flip
Classic 90s, the ends flip outward instead of under, giving movement without a single curl. It’s done with a round brush and a little confidence, nothing fancier than that.
Face-Framing Layers, 90s Style
Softer than today’s face-framing trend, these layers start lower and are less blended, more of a distinct piece around each cheekbone.
The Blunt 90s Lob
No layers at all, just a clean, heavy line at the shoulder. This is the one that photographs the sharpest and needs the least daily effort.
Slightly Undone Waves
Not curled, just left alone after a shower with a little sea salt spray. This is the lazy-girl version of 90s hair and it’s my most requested finish for this era.
Pairing With a 90s Middle Part and Clips
Butterfly clips and thin headbands finish this look better than any product could. It’s playful without trying too hard, which was the entire point of the decade.
Color That Reads Authentically 90s
Think warm, natural-looking honey and caramel pieces rather than today’s cooler balayage. Subtle face-framing highlights read the most period-accurate.
