12 Things to Know About Onion Juice for Hair Growth

Onion juice is the remedy clients are most hesitant to try, and I understand why, the smell is a real commitment. But it has genuine research behind it for supporting hair growth, largely due to its sulfur content, which is why I don’t dismiss it even though it’s a harder sell than a nice-smelling oil.

Here’s what I actually tell clients who are willing to give it a shot.

Juice Fresh Onions Rather Than Buying Pre-Made

Fresh-juiced onion retains more of its active sulfur compounds than anything pre-bottled. Blend and strain a fresh onion right before use.

Apply With a Cotton Ball to the Scalp Only

Use a cotton ball to apply directly to the scalp and part line, avoiding unnecessary contact with the lengths where it isn’t needed.

Mix In Essential Oil to Cut the Smell

A few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil mixed into the onion juice helps mask the scent without diluting the treatment too much.

Leave On for Thirty Minutes, Then Wash Thoroughly

Thirty minutes is enough contact time. Follow with a thorough shampoo, possibly double washing, to fully clear the scent.

Patch Test Before Full Application

Onion juice can irritate sensitive skin. Test on a small patch of skin first and wait twenty-four hours before a full scalp application.

Use It Once or Twice a Week, Not Daily

This is a potent treatment, not a daily habit. Once or twice weekly is enough to see benefit without overdoing scalp irritation risk.
