12 Fundamentals of Natural Hair Growth Every Client Should Know

Before we get into oils and masks and serums, it helps to actually understand how natural hair growth works, because so much confusion comes from not knowing the basics. Hair grows in cycles, not in a straight line, and understanding those cycles changes how patient and strategic you can be.

Here are the fundamentals I make sure every client understands before we build out a routine.

Hair Grows in Three Phases

Anagen is the active growth phase, catagen is a brief transition, and telogen is the resting phase before shedding. Most of your scalp is in anagen at any given time.

Average Growth Is About Half an Inch a Month

Genetics set your baseline pace, generally around half an inch monthly. Nothing changes this dramatically, but healthy habits help you keep what grows.

Retention Matters as Much as Growth Rate

You can grow hair steadily and still not see length if breakage matches your growth rate. Retention habits are just as important as growth habits.

The Scalp Is the Foundation

A healthy, unclogged, well-circulated scalp is the environment every follicle needs to do its job. Scalp care isn’t optional, it’s foundational.

Internal Health Shows Up Externally

Diet, hormones, stress, and sleep all influence the growth cycle. Hair is often one of the last places the body invests resources, so eating enough of the right hair-supportive foods shows up here eventually.

Patience Is Part of the Method

No routine changes the biology of growth cycles overnight. Consistency over months, not days, is what actually produces visible change.
