Low porosity hair has a reputation for being difficult, and honestly, it’s not difficult, it’s just misunderstood. Your cuticle sits tighter than most, so products tend to sit on top instead of soaking in. Once you know that, everything else clicks into place.
These are the twelve rules I walk clients through.
Stick to Lightweight Oils
Almond and argan oil absorb far more easily than heavier oils, which is exactly what low porosity hair needs. Heavy oils just sit on the surface and build up.
Add Heat When You Deep Condition
Warm water and heat actually open the cuticle enough to let treatment in. A heated cap or a warm towel makes a real, noticeable difference here.
Steam Your Hair When You Can
Steam penetrates the strand faster than a liquid product ever could, this is genuinely one of the most effective treatments for low porosity hair.
Go Easy on Protein
Your cuticle is already tight, extra protein tends to make it stiff and prone to breakage instead of stronger. Keep protein treatments occasional, not regular.
Skip Heavy Butters and Creams
They accumulate on the surface rather than absorbing, which leaves your hair looking coated instead of moisturized. Water-based products are your better friend here.
Clarify Buildup With Apple Cider Vinegar
A diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after shampoo clears residue that blocks moisture from getting in. This should be a regular part of your routine, not an occasional fix.
