High porosity hair has a raised, gappy cuticle, which means moisture gets in fast and leaves just as fast. The fix isn’t more product, it’s the right product applied in the right order, sealed properly.
These are the twelve rules I walk clients through.
Seal With the LOC Method, Not LCO
Leave-in, oil, cream, in that order. High porosity hair needs the cream on top to physically seal the cuticle shut after the leave-in and oil have done their job.
Reach for Butters and Heavier Oils
Where low porosity hair drowns under heavy products, high porosity hair actually needs them. Shea butter and castor oil hold moisture in far better than light, fast-absorbing oils here.
Rinse With Cool Water to Help the Cuticle Lie Flat
A cool water rinse at the end of your wash physically helps the raised cuticle close back down, trapping in whatever moisture you just worked to add.
Do Regular Protein Treatments
Unlike low porosity hair, high porosity strands genuinely benefit from consistent protein, it fills in the gaps in the cuticle and strengthens what’s become fragile.
Avoid Over-Washing, It Strips Faster Than You’d Think
High porosity hair loses its natural oils quickly, so washing too often just accelerates the dryness. Stretch your wash days and lean on co-washing in between.
Use Leave-Ins With Humectants Cautiously in Humidity
Humectants pull moisture from the air, which is great in dry conditions but can leave already-porous hair feeling overloaded and frizzy on humid days. Adjust with the weather, not on autopilot.
