Waves are the trickiest pattern to care for, honestly, because they’re the first to fall flat and the first to frizz, sometimes on the same day. The good news is that waves respond fast once you get the basics right.
These are the twelve tips I give clients with wavy hair.
Don’t Over-Brush Dry Hair
Brushing dry waves breaks up the pattern and creates fluff instead of definition. Save the brush, or a wide tooth comb, for when conditioner is already in and your hair has real slip.
Use Mousse or Sea Salt Spray, Not Heavy Cream
Heavy creams weigh waves straight down into limp strands. A light mousse or sea salt spray adds texture and hold without stealing the natural movement.
Scrunch From the Ends Up
Working product from the ends upward encourages the wave to form in clumps rather than scattering it into frizz. Keep your hands cupped and work in one direction.
Air-Dry First, Diffuse Second
Let waves set on their own for the first stretch before you introduce any heat. Diffusing too early disrupts a pattern that hasn’t had the chance to form yet.
Know Your Porosity Before You Buy Products
Waves go flat under the wrong products just as easily as curls do. If you’re not sure what your hair actually absorbs, the low porosity and high porosity guides will tell you fast.
Refresh With Water, Not a Full Rewash
A spray bottle and a little leave-in bring second-day waves back to life. Full rewashing too often strips the natural oil waves rely on to hold their shape.

Waves and curls actually share more rules than you’d think, here’s the curly hair care version for comparison. Which tip is new to you?
